Design Thinking For Social Innovation

Workshop Description

The session will focus on defining the concept of innovation and design thinking in particular while also demonstrating few useful tools of design that enable innovators to create sustainable products that can impact peoples life.

Trainer Bio

Amal is the Director of Babson Global Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, she is responsible for the strategic direction, tactical execution and operational oversight of the Center. The BGCEL focuses on expanding the practice of Entrepreneurship in all levels focusing on activities related to scaling up SMES, female entrepreneurship, angel investment and many other entrepreneurship related areas. She has a diverse range of experience in management, teaching, training and marketing related roles, particularly in education. Over the past four years, Amal has played multiple leading roles at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and at the Entrepreneurship Center in particular. She managed the university startup accelerator, which was funded by Saudi British Bank (SABB) and hosted twenty-eight startup teams in its first edition with a variety of technologies including IOT, New Materials, Software and Biotechnology from 13 different universities. Amal managed the program design, sponsor engagement, startup mentorship and other related matters. Amal also taught and co-designed a course in Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation that was offered to Masters and Post-Doctoral students. She designed and taught in the executive education programs with a focus on innovation for companies and other institutions either in-house or at KAUST. Amal delivered training sessions in all signature programs designed for the needs of the customers. Prior to that she worked in the KAUST Seed Fund that worked with research startup funding and investments. Previously Amal managed an educational organization where she designed programs and innovative initiatives to be implemented by educators in any available setting.
In addition to teaching, Amal ran her own business, which organized mega marketing events and offered commercial consultancy to large organizations. She was also involved with a joint venture with a startup in Dubai focused on creating media and production services to a variety of agencies. Amal Also taught Services Marketing at Wollongong University and published several business articles focused on services marketing. She also participated in many international and regional events as a speaker and a trainer in innovation and Social Design Thinking such as TEDex, the annual Conference of the Islamic Development Bank in Mozambique and Jeddah, Startup Istanbul, UC Berkeley boot camp in Turkey and MIT enterprise forum.
In addition, Amal designed and taught organizational and corporate innovation programs in different parts of the world including: USA, Canada, South Africa, Lebanon, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Amal is also a certified trainer in Design Innovation and Change Management, the World Bank training program in Business incubation Management Training. She also has a Masters in Strategic Marketing from the University of Wollongong in Australia and a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Amal has an executive certificate in Design Thinking from the D-School at Stanford University and acquired two certificates from MIT Sloan School of Management, one in regional entrepreneurship and ecosystem building and the other is for executives in management, innovation and technology.

Hello! I’m Emad and I’m an entrepreneurship educator.

I have passion for education, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity. I’m on a mission to make education fun, relevant and practical. I do this through researching, designing and delivering professional training programs and workshops. My experience is quite diverse as I have worked in many sectors and assumed various roles in engineering, business development, startups and academia. Entrepreneurship was my vehicle for incredible personal development and exciting career transformation.

Today I lecture at Qatar University, develop and deliver training programs, offer online courses to thousands of students, mentor/coach entrepreneurs, speak at various events and often walk around with LEGO Serious Play kits. I often share stories, insights and useful content on my social media channels to benefit and inspire people.

Abdullah Snobar is the Executive Director of the DMZ, a leading tech accelerator that helps high-potential startups scale to world-class businesses and pushes Canadian innovation to the forefront. To date, the DMZ has accelerated 336 companies that have raised over $475M and fostered 3,300 jobs.

Under his leadership since 2015, the DMZ was named the number one university-based incubator in the world by UBI Global, opened its first U.S. office in New York City, launched an advisory council with leading tech and business minds, and with a passionate team, built the most highly sought after and competitive programs for startup growth.

Prior to joining the DMZ, Abdullah held roles at Ryerson University, the Canadian Armed Forces, Fairmont and Marriott Hotels and Resorts and co-founded a non-profit foundation in Kenya. He’s an avid community builder with a longstanding history of working with marginalized and underserved communities at home and abroad. He is a board member with the Ontario Trillium Foundation, alongside several other committee and council engagements. He regularly appears in media and is a member of the Forbes Tech Council and recognized as Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 leader.  Abdullah holds an MBA from Ryerson University.

No matter what business you are in, you are probably in the data business. All businesses generate data, consciously or unconsciously and ought to harness this data, otherwise someone else will do it for them. Data science and massive data analytics are becoming almost a commodity, used for process automation and decision making from: customer retention, supply/value chain optimisation, drug discovery to mention few. However the reality is far from being straightforward, most often the business world is separated from the “Big Data” analytics. This latter is loaded with buzzwords and the strategy is often decided by the sole technologists. This workshop combining interactive presentations and hands-on activities, will provide an end-to-end view on “Big Data” analytics surveying the underlying concepts, trends and key technologies, then present how it can be used as an innovation driver for creating disruptive Platform Business Models.

Dr Radouane Oudrhiri is a seasoned Technology Executive, he invests and coaches a portfolio of start-ups in the areas of: Data Science, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, High Performance Computing, IoT, Smart Cities, Smart Energy & Domotics, Cyber Security, Bioinformatics, Healthcare and Biotech. He is Lean & Six Sigma Master Black Belt and Agile Expert with speciality in high-tech; he is recognised as the leader and early adaptor of Lean & Six Sigma and DFSS to IT and Software. He is a member of the ISO Committee TC69 Quantitative and Statistical Methods, chairing two international groups on Design of Experiments and Big Data, as well as Liaison officer with ISO JTC1/SC 42 on Artificial Intelligence. Radouane has an M.S. in Statistics & Operations Research from ENSAE Paris, an MBA from ESSEC Paris and a Ph.D. in Information Theory and Systems from the joint programme ESSEC and Université d’AIX-Marseille.

Anchored on my personal experience as a research academic passionate about championing scientist innovators and entrepreneurs, I would like to share with you my own thoughts on the interface between academia and entrepreneurship. I will then focus on how to effectively distill then communicate a stance/passion/opinion/innovation in a short presentation, acquiring in the process how to construct and deliver an impactful pitch. All this, whilst working in teams!

Trainer Bio

Dr Mira Kassouf is a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford. Her research interest lies in gene regulation and her current work addresses how certain sequences of DNA act as “on/off switches” for genes in red cells.

Mira believes in the academics’ untapped potential as innovative entrepreneurs. As a founding member of Innovation Forum Oxford in 2015, she supported her local academic ecosystem through organising events that not only inspired and educated but also connected entrepreneurially-inclined academics with like-minded peers and enablers. As the current president of Innovation Forum Oxford, Mira focuses with her team on synergising with the Oxford innovation stakeholders to effectively extract value from the Oxford world-class talents and science excellence and ultimately impact positively on the local and national knowledge economy.
